Bush makes another case for immigration
June 23, 2007 12:09 PM
ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: For the second time in three weeks, President Bush made the case for comprehensive immigration reform in his radio address. Responding to concerns about the government's ability to secure the border, Bush argued that current laws are "ineffective and insufficient."
The President claimed the bill would strengthen border security by allotting $4.4 billion in border enforcement and taking pressure off the border.
But the president added that the economy needs workers from other countries to continue to grow. "This bill provides an historic opportunity to uphold America's tradition of welcoming and assimilating immigrants and honoring our heritage as a Nation built on the rule of law..." Bush said. "By acting now, we can ensure that our laws are respected, that the needs of our economy are met, and that our Nation treats newcomers with dignity and helps them assimilate."
Since its introduction five weeks ago, the bill has endured harsh criticism from both parties, including Republicans who say it would be the equivalent of granting amnesty to the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States. In his radio address today, Bush said, "Under this bill, these workers will be given an opportunity to get right with the law. This is not amnesty. There will be penalties for those who come out of the shadows."
Debate on the immigration bill is scheduled to be brought to the floor on Tuesday.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Bush makes another case for immigration :
Do Bush and Rove believe we are stupid? First, he cannot clain that curren law is inefficient and insufficient when he has made no serious effort to enforce current law. Based on past performance, why would any reasonable person believe that he would effectively use the just added $4.4 billion to secure the border? If we do need workers from other countries for our country to continue to grow I vote we get them from the legal immigrant applicants that are in line and clamoring to be admitted according to our laws. That is the immigrant welcoming tradition that most Americans wish to uphold. How does granting citizenship to illegal immigrants instead of welcoming those who have applied in accordance with our laws, uphold the rule of law? Bush`s prescription will only encourage future law breakers like the last Amnesty bill did. The only immigration reform we need at this time is a law to deny citizenship to children born in this country to illegal immigrants. Even the Congressional Budget office reports that, at best, passage of this boondoggle would decrease illegal immigration by a mere 13%. There is nothing to indicate that enforcement of current law would not have better results.

If you really want to see what is going on with George and the lobbyists truly go to you tube and type in(((((( Cohen immigration )))))and you will find
Immigration
attorneys from Cohen & Grigsby explains how they
assist employers in running classified ads with the
goal of NOT finding any qualified applicants, and
the steps they go through to disqualify even the
most qualified Americans in order to secure green
cards for H-1b workers. See what Bush and Congress
really mean by a "shortage of skilled U.S. workers."
Microsoft, Oracle, Hewlett-Packard, and thousands of
other companies are running fake ads in Sunday
newspapers across the country each week.
I tried to type the address but abc wouldn't let me.
Its OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Listen up Bush, Senators, and Representatives. What's the point of this bill? You aren't even enforcing the current immigration law. Ridiculous.
The following things needs to be done:
- Secure our borders and ports physically. This is absolutely the first thing that needs to be done. Even before talking about a new immigration bill.
- Enforce visa rules. Immigration officials must track visa holders and deport anyone who overstays their visa or otherwise violates U.S. law.
- No amnesty. We have any where from 12 to 20 million illegal aliens in our country. It's very sad that our government doesn't know the exact number
- No social/entitlement programs for illegal aliens. Taxpayers should not pay for illegal immigrants who use hospitals, clinics, schools, roads, and social services. It's free for them but not for us, the American taxpayers!
- End birthright citizenship (AKA No more anchor babies). As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be citizens, the incentive to enter the U.S. illegally will remain strong.
I'm all for legal immigration but 100% against ILLEGAL immigration.
America - call your Representatives today! Stop the injustice. We, the American taxpayers, come first!

This amnesty bill has destroyed the presidential campaign of McCain, it is further destroying the legacy of President Bush, and it will taint or destroy the political career of any Republican senator making a claim to be conservative that supports it.
How naive do these tin-eared politicians think the public is?

The issue here is what this illegal immigration battle really tells us about America's leadership, the will of the American people, and the value of our citizenship: When we are willing to legalize amnesty for those who ignore our borders and our laws, when we are willing to put their demands ahead of the rights and wishes of the vast majority of American citizens, it means America has lost its soul -- the essential will to protect itself and serve its own citizens.
When history's greatest democracy demonstrates it does not care to secure its own borders from terrorists, illegals, and massive drug shipments; when we do not care to protect our own citizens from those who will only add to the millions of unemployed already here; when we are willing to add millions more illiterate people to the millions of undereducated children already in our overburdened schools; when a nation's borders become meaningless lines on a map; then you have a nation that has lost its will to survive.
America is the Disneyland of the world. For all our problems and crises, we are still "the happiest place on earth." But Disneyland the amusement park would not exist, would not survive one day, if it did not secure entrance into it with walls and fences. Disneyland the park would be overrun and destroyed if it did not secure itself and force everyone to get in line, wait their turn, and pay a high price before entry.
"Disneyland America" has lost its soul because only a nation without the most basic sense of itself would be negotiating in Congress to protect its own borders! Do we leave our doors unlocked and allow anyone to enter our homes? Do we allow intruders to stake their claim to our property by simply demanding it and not leaving until it is theirs legally?
When American
citizens have to NEGOTIATE with their own President
to protect their most vital interests, when even our
elected officials do not understand that foreigners
have no rights here other than as pre-approved
visitors, then America lacks the leadership and will
to survive and succeed.

If Bush needs more immigrants to work, I'm for rounding up the illegals and giving them the job, and deduct taxes, from the Govt. the illegals, I heard on a news cast. They sent home to Mexico,0ver S400,ooo,ooo,ooo . They do work American won't do, huh, in a paper yesterday, I saw an add in Mexican, workers for $8.00 an hour. That sure ain't low wages for some one that gets the job.

Senator Ten
Kennedy is the originator and main pusher of the
previous 1965 and the 1986 Immigration bills about
which he made the following promises:
(LIE #1) The bill will not flood our cities with
immigrants.
(LIE #2) It will not upset the ethnic mix of our
society.
(LIE #3)I t will not relax the standards of
admission.
(LIE #4) It will not result in their use of welfare
benefits.
(LIE #5) It will not cause American workers to lose
their jobs or experience reduced pay
(LIE #6) This amnesty will give citizenship to only
1.3 million illegal aliens.
(LIE #7) We will secure the borders henceforth.
(LIE #8) We will never again bring forth an amnesty
bill like this again.
Who would be STUPID enough to believe that our
Government would do a better job at Illegal
enforcement in 2007 and beyond, than it has done to
date?

Quite a bitter
lot, complaining so much when something is being
done about it. What could you ask for? All of you
must be personally affected by this problem, yes?
I agree completely that the authorities have not
been doing an adequate job when dealing with the
issue of illegal immigration.
The fact of the matter is that it isn't working for
a very long time and something must be done!
Does anyone know that it would only get worse before
it gets better? And it would only get better if
congress does something about it.
Your cynical views are not helping at all. What's
needed are solutions, and no lawmaker should be
excused for just doing nothing, whatever the excuse
may be. Thus the problem grows worse.
Does anyone have a realistic and pragmatic view to
this situation? Complaining and not doing anything
substantive is what got us in this quandary.
And all this push back from the lot of us will
confound the problem further.
Politicians are known for doing nothing effectual,
and for some of us really vocal opponents, we are
supporting their course of inaction.
How many of us would prefer that in the end?

STOP THE
LUNATIC NOW!!! Ron Paul has been a leader in the
fight to end illegal immigration. He voted for a
border fence, opposes the current Senate
"compromise" bill, and introduced legislation to end
birth right citizenship. Dr. Paul has consistently
warned Americans about the looming menace of the
North American Union and is the only presidential
candidate calling for an end to welfare benefits,
mandatory medical care and free education for
illegal aliens.
No leader in Washington has fought to end illegal
immigration harder than Congressman Ron Paul. Dr.
Paul knows that America must never grant amnesty to
those who are in our country illegally.
The following are statements Dr. Paul has made in
the U.S. House of Representatives:
-- "The much-vaunted Senate "compromise" on
immigration is a compromise alright: a compromise of
our laws, a compromise of our sovereignty, and a
compromise of the Second Amendment. That anyone in
Washington believes this is a credible approach to
solving our immigration crisis suggests just how out
of touch our political elites really are."
-- "If we reward millions who came here illegally,
surely millions more will follow suit. Ten years
from now we will be in the same position, with a
whole new generation of lawbreakers seeking
amnesty."
-- "...real national security cannot be achieved
unless and until our borders are physically secured.
It's as simple as that. All the talk about fighting
terror and making America safer is meaningless
without border security. It makes no sense to seek
terrorists abroad if our own front door is left
unlocked."
HERE IS HOW YOUR REPS VOTED!!!

Chappaquiddick
Teddy is and has been a criminal sense the event
with the same name! His name is a dead weight around
the neck of the great Kennedy’s; he must need cheap
labor or he wouldn't be on the side of illegal cheap
labor that the millionaire wealthy businesses have
political pushed to accomplish undermining what the
general public doesn't want! To quote the “BAD” Bush
“We are a nation of Laws” except for the illegal
criminal aliens that we need for cheap labor! This
president is the worst president, biggest liar, most
disgraceful president in our history.
They are taking jobs building our million dollar
houses in California, Utah, Arizona etc. I’ve been
told by the housing contractors (Businessmen) won’t
use “lazy Americans” to build these homes. The real
reason is that an illegal’s will work for $5 an hour
and give 10 hours of work for 8 hours of pay and
will never(for now) demand benefits form the
employer(why should they when its free from our
government- medical, food stamps kids schooled,
etc).
We can’t afford to pay $20-$40 and hour fro
carpenters when the houses are costing Americans
1,000,000 dollars; the cheap illegal labor hasn’t
lower the cost at all so the benefit is CHEAP
illegal Labor?
One example of the wealthy American network to bring
cheap illegal labor to increase the only thing they
know $$$ capitalists pigs after every penny they can
squeeze out of America or any other country they can
squeeze blood from. Those of you who haven’t
experienced the overload of illegal’s know that 90 %
of existing Mexicans want there fellow Mexicans
here, for more political power and control of cities
they over whelm with their population explosions.
Every illegal female is pregnant with 2-3 babies
that Americans provide school for and free medical
care, if you work you can’t get it but if your
illegal they get it for free! Where I live they
treat Americans very poorly from their service jobs,
they cater to other Mexicans and it’s a form of the
way American learned not to treat blacks years ago
so if you think it isn’t happing or it can’t; your
wrong it has and is occurring in many cities,
especially one very large city where I live, they
have taken over several cities that make up a large
well know city, locally they have renamed the city
with a Tijuana prefix.
If this isn’t stopped and the Senate bill isn’t
defeated in the Senate we will have to fund free
illegal medical care, social security, baby care to
20 million(not 13). But then the businesses of
America will have passed new laws (one they don’t
want broken) they will force Americans to pay for
all this! By the way I have a Daughter that is
Mexican so I don’t hate Mexicans a lot of them a
wonderful people, its our political system that has
failed us and Big business that wants to remove more
decent paying jobs.
People say we can’t send them all back but we don’t
have to they wil leave if they truly want to become
a American citizen if we only allow people who have
left our soil a chance to reenter. If we put a HEAVY
fine on business and the law beakers, they will
leave! The BIG national security issue it that a lot
of people that have entered is illegal Chinese,
Muslims, Arabs, etc no one talk about this but there
are thousand of them here-Bush again on national
security-BS!

Kennedy, McCain and Bush thinks that Americans are stupid. Quit pushing your scamesty bill. That's what it is. Your argument of doing nothing is a lie. Enforce the law that we have first. Now who is stupid?
Posted by: marc | Jun 24, 2007 12:33:39 PM
We need this bill now. How about all you people who oppose the bill actually consider the real ramifications of our policies. We are dealing with REAL people. You can call them criminals all you want but what are when you speed? Exactly. How about you all realized the meaning of the words compassion and love, it is Sunday after all. Stop going to church and thanking Jesus for his mercy and grace and then turn round and condemn other people. All these immigrants want is a better life, an American life. A life that most of the opponents did NOTHING to deserve and just happen to find yourself in.
Compare the opinions of those who actually live near the border, they overwhelming believe that we need to have a compassionate plan. Now the biggest opponents, (Senator Session of Alabama) don't know what they are talking about. Just because something is illegal doesnt make it wrong. Consider work of MLK, Ghandi, etc. They broke law after law, do you want to punish them. Dont think so.
Realistic, Practical, Compassionate, and Tough. PASS THE BILL.

Ask yourself, Citizens, how much do you trust the Congress that tried to sneak this through? Do you trust "Above the Law" Bush? Do you think they represent the will of the People? If you've read this far, you know the answer to that. This fight will not be over for 2 election cycles when those who tried to give away my country and sell out the sovereignty of the United States go home. Only then will we begin to take back the country for the People. Call, write, protest, shout it to the rooftops.
Posted by: Tar and Feathers | Jun 24, 2007 9:04:57 PM
Another thing.
Bush wants to buy support with promises of money for
border protection when it was HIS DUTY to protect
the United States borders in the first place. Where
was he the last 6 1/2 years? Supporters of this
tripe in Congress are lying, and so is Bush.
It's their nature to do so.

It isn't even
JUST about the ILLEGAL ALIENS any longer in THIS
revised bill. NOW HEAR THIS!!!
If you've been listening to the news, you know that
the immigration
bill may soon be back on the U.S. Senate floor for
consideration.
Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts has
reintroduced his immigration
bill S.1639, which contains many other concerns.
* First,
section 205 of the bill could, in the hands of an
anti-gun
administration, PUT EVERY MAJOR GUN SHOP OUT OF
BUSINESS
* Second, the
immigration bill could deny many gun owners their
right
to find a job or buy a gun.
In regard to
the latter concern, Montana Senator Max Baucus (D)
is
sponsoring an amendment that will delete all
references to "driver's
licenses" and "identification cards" under the REAL
ID Act.
This is a good
thing which will have ramifications for gun owners
nationwide.
Baucus is
directly representing the interests
of his state.
In April, the
state of Montana enacted legislation that
ordered state agencies to REFUSE to implement the
REAL ID (a.k.a.,
National ID) card. Currently, there are about a
dozen states that
have joined Montana either in blocking the
implementation of this law
or in sharply criticizing it. Altogether, about
three dozen states
have introduced legislation to deal with this act in
one way or
another.
Concerned about
the REAL ID law --
which has yet to be implemented -- because of the
threat it poses to
gun owners' privacy. The National ID Card is an $11
billion
boondoggle enacted by Congress in 2005, ostensibly
as an anti-terror
measure. But, of course, there was not a single 9/11
terrorist who
would have been prevented from boarding a plane
because of the lack
of an American driver's license -- or who would be
blocked from doing
so today.
NATIONAL ID CARD POSES DANGERS FOR GUN OWNERS
What the
National ID Card requirement will do, instead, is to
give an
Attorney General (such as, for instance, former
Attorney General
Janet Reno) the unfettered discretion to make it
dramatically more
difficult and time consuming to get a driver's
license. This would
apply equally to new applicants and to Americans who
have had their
drivers' licenses for fifty years.
Thus, if an
anti-gun administration determined that members of
the
militia constituted a threat to national security --
and placed them
on one of its "watch lists" -- many gun owners could
soon lose the
ability to travel, open a bank account, drive, check
into a hotel,
cash a check, get a job, or PURCHASE A GUN from a
dealer.
Seniors who
could not locate their fifty-year-old Social
Security
cards or birth certificates (or persons who had had
those documents
lost or stolen) could face the same fate.
The law would
also allow the federal government to determine the
information which must be digitally encoded on the
license.
Therefore, an anti-gun administration could
theoretically require
that your license contain information about your
concealed carry
status. This will make it, to say the least,
"interesting" when you
are traveling in parts of the country which are
antagonistic to gun
rights.
Further, all of
this personal information on you will be available
nationally and internationally on a computer
database LEGALLY
accessible to millions of people ... and illegally
accessible to
virtually anyone.
The good news
is that a single non-compliant state -- such as
Montana
-- is probably enough to destroy the entire National
ID Card system.
But the immigration bill increases the consequences
for a state like
Montana by threatening to deny every citizen the
opportunity to find
a job.
IMMIGRATION BILL THREATENS JOBS AND GUNS
Here's how. S.
1639 will require all private sector employees to be
screened by an "electronic employee eligibility
verification system"
(Section 1(a)(5)(A)). And Title III of the bill
stipulates that no
employer will be able to hire you unless you possess
identification
that amounts to a National ID card.
Get the picture? No National ID card... no job.
The fact that
section 302(c)(6) asserts that the required
identification is not a "national identification
card" is more a
testimony to the lack of honesty of the supporters
than it is to the
actuality of federal requirements under the 2005
REAL ID Act. (We
have seen these promises before. Remember when
Social Security Cards
used to explicitly state the number and card were
never to be used
for identification purposes?)

Ditto
everything that has been stated by most everyone in
this room (except those few that would like to see
this bill passed). For those of you who would like
to see this bill passed, I'd like to give you a few
facts to ponder: I did some research with regards to
the immigration laws of other countries outside the
United States (including Mexico). I'll start with
Mexico. It is possible to become a citizen of Mexico
AFTER YOU HAVE RESIDED THERE FOR 5 YEARS. In other
countries, the wait is even longer than that. In
many countries, before you can become a resident,
you have to have proof of residence and employment.
In many instances, you also have to have a decent
command of the dominant language that is spoken in
that particular country. There is no nation that I
know of that will grant you citizenship without
first meeting certain qualifications and
stipulations.
For those who would argue that most Americans are
descendants from immigrants from other countries, I
would agree on that point. My heritage is Irish. But
Ireland would not grant me amnesty based simply on
that fact. I will reiterate what most Americans that
I have spoken to believe: As long as people (Mexican
or otherwise) obtain citizenship to the United
States LEGALLY, they should be allowed to live and
work here freely. But that is not the case with
these illegal immigrants. I have been disabled for a
year now, and living on SS disability. My monthly
stipend won't even cover my mortgage payment, and I
am a Registered Nurse who has paid into the Social
Security fund for the past 32 years (11 years of
that while active duty military). This "Pie in the
sky" attitude of doing the right thing, and just
giving illegal immigrants free this and free that
when they haven't contributed one penny to it, is
just not right. There is only so much money to go
around. As I stated earlier, if someone wants to
immigrate to the U.S. and become a citizen legally,
and contribute to our social programs, fine. NO
problem. But to come to our country and just start
demanding benefits that many of our own citizens
don't even have, is just plain selfish and
self-centered. WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE?

Sorry Mr. President, but the PEOPLE want no part of your program.

I find it hard to believe that any senator who is aware that the Congressional Budget Office concludes that the proposed Bush/Kennedy/McCain bill, if passed, would only reduce illegal immigration by 13% is supporting the bill for any reason other than political pandering for Hispanic votes and libbyist`s money e.g. meat packers, hotel chains, etc. To be clear, this sell-out bill would provide amnesty ("a path to citizenship") not only to the illegal immigrants but to the businesses that have exploited them. This may be news to the politicians, but a majority of Hispanic Americans also oppose this slap in the face to all American workers. Bush/Kennedy/McCain all live behind their fences in gated and guarded communities. If it is good for them, why is it bad for us to want a fenced, gated and guarded border?
