MAYOR ROBERT BASS

Is Mayor Bass the best choice for Senate for district 48?

I have dealt with both Mayor Bass and Senator Debra Dawkins and personally I would like to see more candidates running for district 48.

I have several web pages concerning both Mayor Bass and Senator Deborah Dawkins which I will share.

Mayor Robert Bass announced his candidacy on Monday for state Senate, saying South Mississippi needs a stronger voice in the Legislature.

Bass made the announcement at the Friendship Oak at the University of Southern Mississippi in front of about 50 supporters.

He said his experience as a mayor and a certified public accountant would help him to be a good senator.

"Mississippi is in great financial distress," he said. "I'm told it's going to get worse if we don't do something. We have some hard decisions to make."

Some of South Mississippi's most critical needs include water, sewer and transportation, Bass said.

"We have to maintain what we have here and preserve it so that our children and grandchildren will have a place like what we have," he said.

Bass was born and raised in Long Beach, graduating from St. John High School in 1972 and from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 1974.

He received his undergraduate degree in accounting from Mississippi State University in 1976 and his law degree from the University of Mississippi.

In 1997, Bass was elected mayor of Long Beach.

"I am proud of the achievements Long Beach has made during the past five years," he said. "I believe my experience and proven record of leadership can be a valuable asset to District 48. I look forward to serving the people of West Harrison County as their next state senator."

Sen. Debra Dawkins currently represents that district in the Legislature.

In addition to serving as mayor, Bass is a member of the governing board of the Harrison County Wastewater and solid Waste Management District, is on the board of directors of the Mississippi Municipal League and is a member of the USM Gulf Coast Advisory Council.
