The defense appropriations bill that Congress passed Thursday will have an impact in Mississippi, including the following appropriations (amounts rounded off):

 

$2.97 billion for three Aegis-class destroyers, two of which would be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. The third ship would be built by Bath Iron Works in Maine.

 

$267 million for continued development of the LHD-8 amphibious assault ship, which would allow the Navy to award Ingalls a contract to begin building it.

 

$90 million for a C-130J transport aircraft at Keesler Air Force Base.

 

$28 million for defense research and development programs at various Mississippi universities.

 

$4 million to upgrade the airfield lighting at Naval Air Station Meridian.

 

$3.2 million for Combat Simulation Center Trainer upgrades and for maintenance and repair of key roads leading to training areas at Camp McCain in Grenada.

 

$3 million for naval oceanographic research programs at the Naval Meteorology and Oceanographic Command at Stennis Space Center.

 

$1.8 million for the Gulf States Counterdrug Initiative.

 

$1.4 million for the Regional Counterdrug Training Academy in Meridian.
