Senator's
DUI case on hold until Feb. 9 MISSISSIPPI
OXFORD - State Sen. Tommy Robertson appeared in Lafayette County Justice Court on Monday morning, but no decision was made regarding his recent DUI charge. Judge Frances Gordon granted Robertson a continuance at the request of his lawyer, Dwight Ball of Oxford. The trial was reset for Feb. 9. University of Mississippi police officers arrested Robertson, R-Moss Point, on Sept. 27 after the Ole Miss-Texas Tech football game and issued him a drunken-driving citation. Officers were called to the scene late in the night after an incident at the Alumni House parking lot on campus. University police records on the incident have not been released. Robertson's initial appearance was set for Oct. 14. However, he did not appear, and his lawyer entered an innocent plea. Ball said he asked for a continuance Monday because Robertson and several of his witnesses had to be in Jackson as soon as possible and other cases on the docket would have delayed his case until after lunch. After his arrest, Robertson said he would challenge the charges and said he had not been given "any admissible" test to determine his blood-alcohol level. The defense had five witnesses on hand, while the prosecution had six, including three officers. All witnesses were dismissed by the judge when the continuance was granted. Robertson won a re-election bid last week with 65 percent of the vote. He will start his fourth term in January. |
